How to use indexed color palette in GIMP

  1. Go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed

GIMP main window with a picture of a bunny and Image menu opened.

  1. Change the settings so they fit you (in this example I set Use black and white (1-bit) palette, with default dithering option)

A window with a title of “Convert Image to Indexed Colors”

  1. Profit!

Main window opened with a bunny on grass, but with reduced colors.

Tips

I recommend playing around with light and contrast to improve the look of the resulting image. Changing the dithering option can also help with colors.

Result

A bunny standing on grass, displayed using only black and white pixels.

Also, the resulting image is now smaller, since it needs less colors to store :3
